It’s that time of year where I start freaking out my Confirmation
class by talking about the Statements of Faith that they will be
writing at the end of their two years. It’s an intimidating
document to write, primarily because they have never written
one before; to this point in their lives, they have always been
given assignment to write about other people, to summarize
things that can be checked. Writing down what THEY believe, and
why, in that precise moment, can be a struggle.
It’s something I recommend older members of the church to do as
well. A statement of faith isn’t a lifelong commitment, just a
marker of where you are in the moment you write it.
Simultaneously the most profound thing you have written up to
that point, and no sooner than it is written, it is out of date.
Faith is an ever-shifting thing, just as we are always developing,
always growing. That’s the whole point; a known thing will
generally stay known; a believed thing will shift as you do.
So… what do you believe? And have you ever considered writing
it down?
